It will take more than one of the warmest winters on record to stop the annual Jaycees Ice Fishing Tournament on Gull Lake or the Eelpout Festival on Leech Lake. Both are still on. But the lack of snow has made it difficult for the snowmobile industry, and accommodations, bars, restaurants and associated businesses are feeling the pinch.

Senior Lance Hoff defended his title in the 50 freestyle event at the Central Lakes Conference swim meet in Brainerd. He also broke his own pool record he set last year in the 100 freestyle, swimming it in 48.64 seconds. “I felt really good today,” Hoff said. “Everything starts to click.”
40 years ago (1982)
Preliminary approval for funding a $13.2 addition and renovation to St. Joseph’s Hospital was given at the city council meeting despite protests from some neighbors about the parking situation. A request to sell industrial tax bonds will now be sent to the state for approval.
60 Years Ago (1962)
Guard Bob Rofidal, whose backyard work helped the Warriors go 32-2 over the past two years, was named WCCO-Radio’s All-State Team of the Week. Rofidal, who teams up with Russ Akre to give Brainerd a devastating combination of press and fast break, can also score when needed, like on 20 and 19 point outings recently.
80 years ago (1942)
Brainerd’s first contribution to the scrap paper salvage project is on its way east today after being dispatched by the local committee. With around 30 tons – half in magazines and half in paper – the shipment will fetch $200 into the coffers of the local Red Cross for its war efforts.
100 years ago (1922)
Vernon Dieckhaus is at Northwestern Hospital recovering from an open fracture of his left leg. The accident happened while he was tobogganing on Ahrens Hill and hit a tree. The other runners were scattered, unscathed. Eight-year-old Bernard Shepherd broke his right leg when he slipped on the embankment and was taken to Northwestern Hospital.
