20 years ago (2002)

More than a month ago, JP Platisha set a school hockey record that no one had achieved until now. In a 4-3 Warrior win over Chaska, he scored a goal and an assist to become Brainerd’s all-time leading scorer in men’s hockey. The two points gave Platisha 145 points, one more than 1986 graduate Sandy Smith.

30 years ago (1992)

Kyle Smith and Chris Halverson combined for 41 points to lead the Warriors men’s basketball team to its eighth straight win, a 68-56 win at Alexandria. Smith scored 21 points and Halverson scored a season-high 20 points for Brainerd who is tied for the conference lead and ranked 8thand in class AA.

40 years ago (1982)

The Minnesota Supreme Court placed County Judge Darrell Sears on permanent probation after the judge admitted that alcohol abuse affected his work on the bench and that he sexually harassed some female attorneys and county staff. The court said Sears, 56, “must abstain completely from alcohol and follow a treatment program.

60 Years Ago (1962)

High freight rates to eastern markets, declining mining on the Cuyuna Range, and the availability of high-grade foreign ore on the east coast lead to the closure of the manganese plant at Riverton. The factory, built in 1953 and which currently employs 41 people, will move in March.

80 years ago (1942)

He does his part. AP Nordstrom, Brainerd, buys all the defense bonds he can and encourages his five sons, who have all enlisted. Albert, 36, is with the Marines in Seattle; Clarence, 35, in the Coast Guard; Ernest, 21, and Orville, 26, are training in the army; Roy, 23, is with Co. A in the Philippines; Clifford, 28, is in an aircraft factory and will enlist soon.

100 years ago (1922)

The New Park Theater was packed last night for the first showing of the Century Comedy Co. film in which “Shorty” Anderson appears. His mother, Mrs. Erick Anderson, and friends and family from southeast Brainerd were at the show to see him. The film starts tonight.
