20 years ago (2002)

The Warrior girls’ swim team couldn’t beat Elk River, but they finished second in the Section 8, 2A swim meet and will send eight swimmers to the state meet. Brainerd was led by Christina Roberts, winning the 200 freestyle and setting a school record. Sarah Gervais, with a school record in the 100m breaststroke, and the 200m freestyle relay are also going to the state.

30 years ago (1992)

County Attorney Jack Graham said he will investigate the accuracy of the county’s ballot counting system. County auditor Roy Luukkonen said he would look into why the optical scanning system had so many failures. It’s the most popular system in the state, and no other counties have reported significant problems.

40 years ago (1982)

The Minnesota Supreme Court has rejected John Rieck’s attempt to reduce his prison sentence from 15 to 30 years at Stillwater Prison. He was convicted in 1977 of throwing a firebomb at a neighbor’s house. Ironically, the decision came seven months after Rieck escaped from prison and is still at large.

60 Years Ago (1962)

Proof that deer hunting is off to a good start here is shown by the 151 who have entered the Lassig’s Log Cabin contest so far. The leaders are a 248 pound male, a 137 pound doe and a 295 pound bear. An unfortunate hunter is the man who had his deer stolen from his car while at a restaurant.

80 years ago (1942)

SG Fitzpatrick, Brainerd’s attorney, was appointed acting judge of the City Court effective Dec. 10. He will succeed Judge Eleanor Nolan, who enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Corps and will report for duty in December. Governor Harold Stassen made the appointment today.

100 years ago (1922)

Proclamation: Given the Eternal Significance of November 11e, I believe the town of Brainerd should make it memorable. As Mayor, I hereby urge all citizens to appropriately decorate their homes, stores and offices to acknowledge the armistice that ended this terrible destruction and loss at the end of the war.
