20 years ago (2002)

Sheriff Dick Ross is asking for the public’s help in locating a man involved in a shooting in Ross Lake Township. Last week. Lonnie Davis said several men entered his yard and shot him in the ear. Another man was shot in the head and is hospitalized in critical condition. The suspect, 20, is considered armed and dangerous.

30 years ago (1992)

The Dispatch was named one of the top winners of the Inland Press Assn.’s annual news writing competition, with member newspapers in 33 states. The award was for timely reporting on coverage of the Front Street fire last October. The staff members involved were Kathi Nagorski, Paul Windels, Lew Hudson and Jeff Maloney.

40 years ago (1982)

The county’s 30 health care nurses yesterday informed the county council of their intention to strike as attempts to negotiate a two-year wage deal have so far failed. Another negotiation is scheduled in two days, but committee member Mary Koep notes that nurses are required to give 10 days notice before acting.

60 Years Ago (1962)

Lac Hubert resident Maurice Trask has now entered the race for county sheriff and is circulating a petition with 500 signatures. He says it will be completed by the October 22 deadline. He is the fourth candidate for the position, joining Sheriff Chuck Warnberg, Brainerd Police Chief Louis Rofidal and Crosby’s Bill Christensen.

80 years ago (1942)

An ordinance providing for a curfew for all children under the age of 16 received its first reading by the city council. Children unaccompanied by their parents must leave the street at 10 p.m. The NP Stores whistle will sound at 10 p.m. as a reminder. Special curfews until 11:15 p.m. may be established for “school night” functions.

100 years ago (1922)

Colonel Freeman Thorpe d’Hubert, renowned artist, died here at the age of 78. He was a cavalryman during the Civil War and saw Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Given a studio on the roof of the Capitol in Washington, he has painted portraits of every president from Lincoln to today. Many hang on the walls of Congress, including Lincoln, Grant and McKinley.
