JSO encounters major computer system issues, causing shipping, jail issues: sources

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is experiencing major computer issues on Sunday that are impacting its jail dispatch and booking processes, two sources with knowledge of the situation told News4JAX.

As of Sunday evening, JSO had yet to comment on the issues or provide any details on when or how the issues started.

The Tributary, which was the first news outlet to report the issues, said “internet outages” on Sunday affected the ability of officers to file arrest reports.

A cybersecurity expert told News4JAX that he was told by his sources that the JSO computer system was compromised around 6 a.m. Sunday.

It’s not yet clear whether the issues are related to a ransomware attack like those seen in recent years.

The issues won’t impact if residents have to call 911 and report a crime.

“They can still take calls. The 9-1-1 system just fell. They just have to treat them differently,” said cybersecurity expert Chris Hamer. “Every dispatch center has a plan when things go awry.”

News4JAX has contacted several government agencies to try to learn more, including JSO, the City of Jacksonville, the State’s Attorney’s Office and the FBI, but has yet to receive a response.

This is a developing story that will be updated as News4JAX learns more details.
