The LOSSAN agency received the AdWheel Grand Prizes for strategic campaigns that included critical communications during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ORANGE, California, 22 November 2021 / PRNewswire / – The Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency, which oversees the Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® service, received two AdWheel Grand Awards from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The AdWheel Awards recognize the “best of the best” in marketing and communications within the public transport industry. Grand Prize winners are selected from the first place winners in a category.
A ceremony was held during the TRANSform conference of the APTA in early November, in honor of the AdWheel winners for 2020 and 2021. LOSSAN agency was announced as the winner of two Grands Prix in the following strategic categories:
Better Marketing and Communication on COVID-19 – Pacific Surfliner COVID-19 Social Media Communications (2021)
Best Educational Initiative in Marketing and Communication – Pacific Surfliner and Disneyland Resort partnership to promote other transportation options (2020)
LOSSAN’s COVID-19 social media communications campaigns have played a critical role in reaching tens of thousands of people at the height of the pandemic to share timely and accurate information on train travel, including schedule updates, health and safety information, passenger tips and more. Social media was also leveraged to maintain relationships with customers at a time when they were not actively taking trains and to establish a base to recover ridership in the future.

The LOSSAN agency received a second grand prize in the 2020 Educational Initiative category, which recognizes the 2019 marketing efforts that succeeded in raising awareness of the train as a travel option for the Disneyland® Resort. The campaign promoted an ongoing partnership with the Disneyland® Resort which includes savings on theme park admission for Pacific Surfliner customers and discount on train travel to Anaheim.
Applications were reviewed by industry peers and assigned to groups based on the size of the system. Over 360 entries have been submitted for the 2021 awards, the highest number of entries for several years.
