PMC plans to integrate bike plan into its city development plan

Fist: In a bid to promote the use of bicycles in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation has announced the integration of a detailed master plan for bicycles in its city development plan. The civic corporation has also decided to seek citizen suggestions and objections on the draft plan.
The draft plan, backed by the Union Ministry of Urban Development, aims to make Pune bicycle-friendly by increasing the percentage of the population using bicycles from 9% to 25% by the year 2031.
The ‘Pune Cycle Plan’ was drawn up in 2016 and approved by the general civic body in 2017. The plan was prepared with the help of consultants and data collection. Studies on traffic scenarios for cyclists and cycle paths were carried out.

More than 10,000 people were surveyed to develop the plan. The proposed plan says existing bikeways covering more than 90 km of the city can be used by connecting missing links, improving current designs, and strictly prohibiting other activities on bikeways.

Additionally, he suggests separating bike lanes on arterial roads. At city traffic intersections, the plan recommends identifying bicyclist waiting spaces and dedicating signs to cross the street. The plan also recommends the PMC promote cycle-oriented educational campuses.
