ORLANDO – According to data from GfK Market Intelligence, eyecare professionals are fitting more astigmatic and presbyopic patients into contact lenses.

CooperVision executives believe their Biofinity toric multifocal, launched in February 2020, has contributed significantly to this growth.

According to GfK, 50% of patients fitted for this lens are wearers of new or expired contact lenses, CooperVision said in a press release.

“Data shows that Biofinity toric multifocal contact lenses fit wearers into this category,” Michèle Andrews, DO, Vice President of Professional and Government Affairs, Americas, CooperVision, said Primary Care Optometry News/ Healio here at Vision Expo East.

Clinicians experience a 93% success rate when using the fit guide, Andrews said.

“It builds confidence in ECP… they have confidence in the performance of the lens,” she said.

The Biofinity toric multifocal offers an option for ECPs to evolve their patients wearing toric contact lenses when they become presbyopic, the company said in the statement.

“In fact, GfK data shows that among Biofinity toric multifocal wearers that are remade from a different lens, the majority are toric,” the statement said.

GfK data showed that the multifocal contact lens segment in the United States grew 4% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the previous year, the company said in the release.

The company also announced here at Vision Expo East that the settings for Biofinity XR were extended in May.

“There isn’t one eye that cannot be matched to this goal,” Andrews said.

CooperVision said in a separate press release that the lens is now available in 33,000 prescriptions.
