Vehicle hits one-year-old, claims the life of a toddler

WALKER – A one-year-old girl died on Sunday May 2 after being struck by a vehicle in a driveway at a residence just south of Walker.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called at 4:55 p.m. following the fatal crash at Breezy Point Circle in Shingobee Township in rural Walker. The assistants arrived and immediately began first aid and rescue efforts. The toddler was transported to a nearby landing zone where rescue efforts continued, but were unsuccessful, the sheriff’s office reported. The child was declared deceased.

The suspicious vehicle that struck the one-year-old left the scene before the deputies arrived, but returned to the area. MPs contacted the driver – a 28-year-old Walker – who was taken into custody near the scene and transported to the Cass County Detention Center where he is awaiting formal charges.

The Star Tribune reported that the detained Walker man was driving while his license was revoked, was cited on March 12 for reckless driving in Bemidji and jailed on March 25. The Star Tribune also reported that the man was convicted and sentenced to 45 days in prison by Beltrami District Judge John Melbye, who remained 27 days out of term, allowing the man to be released on the 13th. April rather than May 9.

An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office and the investigation is continuing.

Walker Police Department, North Memorial Medical Ambulance, North Memorial Air Health Service and Walker’s Fire Department assisted the sheriff’s office at the scene.
